Winter Swamp Hike

We took a six mile hike in a swamp today. We saw a lot of birds...(click on any picture to enlarge)

...and a lot of alligators.

Which one is different?

almost hidden

someone is sleepy

My hiking buds

someone was waiting by the trail for the careless yappy dog

Palmettos are almost a symbol of southern swamps

This tree told me in a spooky voice, "I'd turn back if I were you".

We did have to detour as the trail became deeper under water

Cutting through a grove to get to a road

Even swamps have elevation changes

And then the rain started

Milton Reimers Ranch

We drove twelve miles southwest of Bee Cave, Texas to this ranch for a hike.

I did not recognize this bush but it smelled wonderful and the bees loved it. Click on any picture to enlarge.

The start of an adventure?

To stay on the trail, we had to climb down through this grotto

I offered to show to show him the trail out of the canyon

Water dripping and forming a stalagmite

A tree hugger

trail shots going down

American Beauty bush

A shady spot with running spring water and a deep pool of clear water

The creek ends in the river here

Pedernales Falls State Park - Johnson City, Texas

This is one of the best state parks in Texas sitting on the Pedernales River.  We have been here at least 6 times at varying degrees of water level and were surprised to see this much water here at the end of summer.  There are miles of hiking trails that carry you along the river banks, tubing in the swimming area ,and of course camping sites.
