Comfort, Texas - The Hill Country

Comfort, Texas is 15 miles east of Kerrville off I 10 and about 45 min. west of San Antonio. The town follows the Gauadalupe River, and during 1978 a flash flood destroyed many of the historic buildings .  Approximately 2000 people call this their home today. The historic downtown offers a variety of shopping, eateries, and bed and breakfast accommodations.

Comfort, Texas was established by German settlers in 1854. Traveling  from New Braunfels, the small group of settlers, known as Freethinkers,  was so pleased by this picturesque site and pure water that they named it Camp Comfort.  Click to enlarge a fuller explanation...it was really quite interesting to read about these settlers.

One of the cutest corners in all the hill country.

Loved going into all the historic houses that are now boutique businesses.

Yes, we were tempted...

This can put you in the right frame of mind for shopping

Yes, it is still operational...

The bank still operational

Creative yard art

This is the local tavern...thus, the  "meet" market.  Plus, the owner was really into the Beatles...

We can't post all the scarecrows that adorned this town.  We counted at least twenty scarecrow variations on porches, business fronts, even at the entrance into town.  They like scarecrows here.

Comfort is known for great antique shopping...you can see why

this one antique store was simply amazing...it is tough when you see so many things from your childhood in an antique mart!

And when you have enough shopping, you drive five min. outside of town to Singing Waters Winery.  Live music and a good bottle of wine- perfect ending to a great day.
