Waterfalls around Munising, Michigan

Yes, it is beginning to look a lot like fall in upper Michigan. When we woke up this morning, it was 53 degrees and winds gusts between 20-30 miles an hour.  We had planned a boat cruise of the Picture Rock National Shoreline, but that was not happening with this weather.

So, seeing the weather was not cooperating, we decided to take a waterfall tour around the area and a bit further inland.  There are 15 waterfalls around the Munising area, most are at full force and beauty in spring.  But we found three excellent hikes with some nice water action.

First Stop:  Laughing Whitefish Falls; Height: 100' Distance:  Two miles round trip

The trail was easy going and quite beautiful.

The sandstone bluffs were quite interesting.

and then we saw the stairs....over 129 to view the falls...we lost count---whew!

but wow!!

The falls led into a long cascade.

Overall, even though we had to walk back up those 129 plus stairs, it was a great hike!

Second Stop:  Wagner Falls  Height: 20 foot cascading waterfall  Distance: about half a mile round trip

At the entrance to this hike, just a shot of the pretty day, but you can see even ten miles inland that wind is blowing.

Easy walking; boardwalk most the way, but best of all no stairs!
Stop Three: Munising Falls - Height: 50 foot   Distance: half a mile round trip

Uh-oh...the trail pretty much begins with stairs...

can you imagine this?

Nice walk along the cliff outcroppings.

Low water on this fall; we saw some pics of what it looks like in spring...well, you can imagine.

None the less, a nice stop along the waterfall tour...
