Lake Michigan National Forest Recreation Area

The sand along Lake Michigan in Northwest Michigan is of superior quality.

We brought our swimsuits but ended up hiking the trails along the beach, the dunes, the ravines, and the forest.

The water is very clear.

150 feet from the beach, you are in a comfortably cool forest. The temp was 76F at 1:00pm.

The forest belends into the dunes and then the beach.

Lake Michigan National Forest is a wilderness along the lake between Ludington and Manistee. It has nice beaches and several campgrounds. Looking south from an observation deck we climbed.

View from the deck to Lake Michigan.

There were 169 steps but a level walk in between every 7 - 10 steps so the climb was not bad.

  1. So the experience of going to the "beach" minus the salt? I'm in.
